This tour connects Poreč with Istrian hinterland, with medieval town of St. Lovreč as the main highlight. This historical town has one of the best-preserved medieval fortifications in Istria. In Venetian times, it was the headquarters of Captains, military commanders of the Istrian region. The tours starts in Poreč; riding along country roads and forest trails we arrive to Ženodraga. After crossing the highway, we pass Baderna and continue to St. Lovreč. Here we suggest making a short break, taking a walk through the historical town center and having a coffee right next to the town walls. On the return to Poreč, we ride through a hilly area of south Poreč countryside. This part of the tour is very dynamic, with many short climbs and descents. You can alo start your tour in Sveti Lovreč.
You will find this hidden gem in the western part of the Istrian peninsula - one of the best-preserved medieval fortified towns in Istria. The first mention of Sveti Lovreč, Castrum Sancti Laurentii, is found on a map dating back to 1030 (lat. castrum fortified military settlement).
Sveti Lovreč, inhabited thousands of years ago, developed on the site of a prehistoric hillfort. Already in Byzantine times it was fortified with walls and towers, and the largest part of the fortification, preserved to this day, dates back to the long period of Venetian rule.
